Hello doctor,
I have a mild overbite, and it is getting harder and harder to close my mouth, looking like a chipmunk trying to hide its food. I am currently 15 years old and want to get it treated as soon as possible, but my parents advised me to wait till I am at least 18 because there are some health hazards. So I want to know if I should get it fixed or wait another three years?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
You have an open bite. Lesser overbite is a cause of an open bite. It causes difficulty in swallowing and, in some cases, leads to tongue thrust habit, resulting in protrusion of upper and lower anterior teeth, and spacing could occur between teeth. Molar relation with malocclusion problems should be addressed. I would suggest diagnostic tests like cephalogram and OPG (orthopantomogram). Also, observe for tongue thrusting while swallowing. The treatment options are clear aligner therapy, tongue crib removable appliance, or fixed orthodontics with tongue crib. You could have a fair treatment outcome. But retention is important. Otherwise, the condition would relapse.
