Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

The gum over my wisdom tooth is not fully covered, and it has been hurting for hours. I think it is slowly ripping as the tooth grows. When I open my mouth, it is hurting so much. I feel difficulty while eating. When will this get cured?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the attached picture (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity).

I understand your concern.

Generally, when a tooth erupts, the gum over it gives space, and the tooth emerges. But if the tooth is not positioned in a proper direction and locked inside the jaw, the gum over it will still cover the half erupted tooth and can make the food trap in the gap leading to an inflamed gum flap called pericoronitis. Topical pain relief gel like Orajel (Benzocaine gel) and saline rinses will help relieve your pericoronitis symptoms.

Unfortunately, it may not help in your case as the tooth seems locked in a different direction, and there is no possible space for it to erupt further. Hence the flap might stay the same. You might need the removal of the improperly erupted wisdom tooth to prevent this in the future. Kindly visit your nearest dentist for further management.

I hope this helps.

If any further queries, I will be happy to help.
