Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a breastfeeding mother to my four months old second baby. My partner and I had sex, and after one month, I checked for pregnancy, but the test was negative. My concern is I have not got my periods yet. What could be the reason?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. A hormone called prolactin causes the breast to produce milk, and this hormone prevents the release of eggs from the ovary. So as far as the return of the period is concerned, your baby is entirely dependent on breastfeeding, so it may take up to a year for your period to return. However, if you achieve a balance between breastmilk and formula or a semi-solid diet for your baby in due course of time, then the production of milk will slowly reduce. Thus the overall effect of prolactin will decrease, and the onset of the period will commence. Also, that does not mean that you should stop taking precautions for birth control, as pregnancy has occured in a few cases despite the periods not being there.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
