Hello doctor,
My father had sun poisoning three years ago, which resulted in an intense itching all over. He took a steroid cream and an antihistamine which helped to some extent, but the symptoms reoccur every summer. He has a somewhat dark complexion as he has been working in the sun for his whole life. He is 55-years-old now, and the intense itch causes him to scratch the skin, causing a wound. He also worked in pools and has regular exposure to chlorine. Is it normal to have chronic symptoms from sun poisoning? Is there any over-the-counter medication to give him some relief? He refuses to return to the doctor.
Any advice or insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated because he is extremely uncomfortable.
Thank you.

Hello doctor,
Thanks for replying.
I have attached the closest picture of my father's allergy.
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Thank you for providing the photograph (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity).
Yes, he has skin rashes on the hand and neck area also. It is photodermatitis (photoallergy). It is a kind of allergy that anyone could develop.
At this point, I suggest Mometasone cream (0.1%) at night for ten days and a sunscreen lotion such as Suncros (Tocopheryl acetate and Zinc oxide) with SPF 30 to 50 to be applied 30 minutes before going to outdoor work. Take tablet Levocetirizine 5 mg twice daily for five days and then once daily for the next five days.
Kindly advice him to wear a full sleeve dress and a hat (cap) during outdoor activities.
Thank you.
