Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I hope you are doing well. My wife is pregnant with our second child, and I cannot help but worry. Our firstborn was born with a hole in his heart, and it was a tough ride getting him through surgery. Now, my wife is 33, and we are just hoping and praying that this baby does not have to go through the same thing. I have been reading up a bit, and I know there can be complications during pregnancy, especially with a history like ours. I am just wondering, what are the chances that this baby might also have a heart problem? Are there any signs or symptoms we should be looking out for? And if the worst happens, what kind of burden would that put us on, emotionally and financially?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I can imagine you walking on the rough road. I trust after surgery, your first baby is doing well. The chances of getting a similar problem with the second baby increase with the history of the previous sibling. There are good chances of the second baby being normal depending on what was the cause for the first baby being born with a heart problem. Is there any other family history from the mother or father's side? Did mom have any viral infection during pregnancy or had any other problem, including whether she was prescribed some drugs that are not to be taken during pregnancy? They must have done all the tests for your first baby; if you can share them, then I can advise you accordingly. With modern technology and advances in the medical field, it is possible to diagnose the problem during pregnancy, and even some of the conditions can be taken care of by heart surgery on the baby during pregnancy (it depends on the facilities and expert team availability at your place). Get your wife regularly checked up and monitored by timely sonography and blood tests; that is the way to diagnose the situation as early as possible. Mom may not feel or have any untoward feelings or signs and symptoms, so do not depend on that. She might be perfectly normal, but take precautions. I hope everything will be alright this time, so do not worry. Simply take care and take all precautions.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Regards.
Thank you.
