Hi doctor,
How does one know which practitioner to see for prenatal care and childbirth? Should we prefer a home or a hospital setting? Why do the majority of women choose doctors? Home births are gradually increasing. Why is it not expanding more quickly? Dispel the myth that home births are dangerous. Recent research indicates that planned home births with a midwife are safe, cost-effective, and have health benefits that extend beyond one pregnancy.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The woman deciding to choose a practitioner, and ideally, a qualified gynecologist and obstetrician, is always a good choice because the main concern here is safety during delivery. However, most deliveries are normal and can be performed by midwives. Complications during delivery, such as obstructed labor, delayed descent, postpartum hemorrhage, second stage, cord prolapse, even twin delivery, and many more, increase the chances of maternal morbidity. And these cannot be managed even by trained midwives and will require the care and management of a specialist. Therefore, unless the hospital and specialist care are readily available, it is always safer to choose an obstetrician rather than a midwife.
