Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female, and I had unprotected sex with my husband just four days after my period. How can I prevent my pregnancy with medications?

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The sperms must be released inside the vagina of the female to get pregnant. These sperms then need to fertilize an egg which may or may not be available depending on the ovulation pattern of the female. Further, the fertilized egg must be implanted in the female's uterus. When all this happens successfully, a female is said to have conceived. If you have regular periods, there are fewer chances that you would have ovulated in the next four days. So, the chances of pregnancy are really low as no egg was most likely available. However, the sperms can survive up to five days in a female's body. So, in rare cases, if you ovulate on the ninth day, there is a rare possibility that the egg gets fertilized. If it is less than 72 hours since the intercourse and you do not have a blood disorder or heart ailments, I suggest you take an emergency contraceptive pill like I-pill (Levonorgestrel). Consult a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medications with their consent. How many hours have passed since the intercourse?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply.

We had intercourse four days ago. Please provide me with information regarding the following:

  1. Are contraceptive pills safe?
  2. Do they have any side effects?
  3. What happens when I take I-pill?
  4. Do I need to rest after taking it?

I am worried because I am not ready for pregnancy.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand you are under stress, so I suggest you take one tablet of I-pill (Levonorgestrel). Consult a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medications with their consent. You have a rare pregnancy possibility, but since you said you are not ready for it, you may consider taking the pill. Further, if you are healthy and have no blood or arterial disorders, only minor side effects are seen, like nausea. You will most likely have bleeding for around ten days from today, and then you can expect your regular period after one month. The pills are better effective when taken at the earliest.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
