Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My parents are diabetics, and I fear that I might get it too. I am 28 years old and take utmost care to prevent it. Please suggest ways to prevent diabetes. What tests should I undergo for diabetes, and how frequently should I do them?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Diabetes is a familial disorder, but fortunately, it is preventable. Since both your parents have it, you must take all the precautions. I suggest you do walking, jogging, strength building exercise every day. One can do strength-building activities twice a week to maintain normal body weight. Your BMI (body mass index) should be less than 15.45 pounds per square inch. Avoid eating excessive sweets, junk foods, deep-fried foods, bakery items, and bread. Check your blood glucose level once in six months and keep track of lipids. Females must be more careful as they might develop gestational diabetes, which can affect the fetus. So, one needs to take care in terms of diet, exercise, and weight control. Following are the normal, pre-diabetic, and diabetic criteria which you should be aware of, normal fasting glucose levels - 70 to 100 mg per 100 ml after food, HbA1c % (hemoglobin A1c) should be less than 5.7 %, pre-diabetes fasting blood glucose levels - 101 mg to 125 mg per dl, post-prandial levels - 141 to 199 mg per dl, HbA1c % - 5.7 % to 6.4 %.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
