Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 43-year-old female, and my periods have been irregular for the past year. I may have some light spotting or nothing at all. However, this month I got my period and experienced an extremely heavy flow. I have been on my period for the past 11 days and have very heavy bleeding. Kindly let me know if this is normal.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Women enter the premenopausal stage after the age of 40 years. It is possible to have irregular periods with scanty or heavy flow, sometimes even for weeks. Heavy bleeding during menstruation (over 80 mL) is also called menorrhagia. It may be caused due to multiple factors like hormonal imbalances, fibroids, polyps, or thyroid problems. On the other hand, it is possible that the bleeding is due to hormonal changes in menopause.

As you are experiencing extremely heavy bleeding, you must immediately consult your healthcare provider or gynecologist and let them know your concerns. Your gynecologist will perform a physical examination and ultrasound scan to check the uterus. Blood tests will be advised to check the hormone levels and iron levels in the body. In addition, they may recommend treatment options such as hormone replacement therapy to guide your menstrual cycle. In severe cases, the doctor may advise a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or D&C (dilatation and curettage).

Kindly share your reports after you carry out the tests.

Regards.
