Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had lots of rectal bleeding, so I saw a GI. He scheduled me for an endoscopy and colonoscopy; however, the tests were not conducted. My blood reports stated that my hemoglobin was only 8.2 g/dL, but my platelet count was over 1 million. Could I be suffering from leukemia?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns.

From the attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), you have mild to moderate thrombocytosis, which is called reactive thrombocytosis. Possible causes could be infection, inflammation, or iron deficiency. To exclude leukemia, a blood film examination is required. What about the white blood cell count? The cause of rectal bleeding must be identified. I recommend blood transfusion and correction of hemoglobin above 10g/dL, then colonoscopy to determine the cause of bleeding.

Pleased to provide any further advice.

Your feedback will be appreciated.
