Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Ten years back, I got root canal treatment done for one of my lower tooth. But, since two weeks,I started getting pain and went to the dentist. The dentist suggested doing the RCT again. During the second sitting, he said there was a metal file inside the teeth nerve, which was broken by the previous dentist (but I never got any pain for a long period). However after the second sitting only, I am getting severe pain that I am even not able to drink anything. The pain is reaching my head. What may be the reason for such pain? I have doubts about this dentist. If the metal file had been there for ten years, I should have been getting pain, but I never got it during this period. Please guide me on whether the current treatment is fine, as I cannot eat and drink.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, the chances that a metal file remaining in the root without causing pain is possible. If you have doubts, ask the dentist for an x-ray before he starts the root canal. Every dentist takes an IOPA- X-ray (intraoral periapical radiograph) before he starts RCT (root canal treatment). Upload that here, and we will tell you if it was present there before or if it has broken now. Pain may be because of an infection of the tooth, which happens while the cavity is left open or if contaminated instruments are used. You will feel better if you use antibiotics. Kindly provide your age, weight, and medical history so thsat I can guide you better.

Thank you.
