Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She has been having hallucinations and delusions for 40 days. She started taking her medicine for 24 days (Zopitab 2.5 mg for 15 days and Zopitab 5 mg for nine days). The doctor suggested admitting her to the hospital and giving injections to improve her treatment. She was reluctant from the beginning about the treatment. Admitting may make her weak mentally as she is not accepting that she has some illness. Could you please suggest if we have to admit her and get her injections, or is it fine if we continue with the tablet we are currently using (Zopitab 5 mg)?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your mother's situation, and you are a great son who has concerns about your mother. she is on a tablet Zopitab (Olanzapine) 5mg. It is one of the best antipsychotic medications for schizophrenia. You can wait for its effect. Tablet Olanzapine takes four weeks for full-blown effect. You should gradually increase the dose from 5 mg every week to 20 mg and wait for four weeks for admission or injection. If there is no severe or behavioral issue, then you can wait for the medication effect. I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
