Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had safe intercourse with a woman but did not know her STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) status. Should I worry about the herpes simplex virus? I read online that precautions do not save from all STDs. Please help me. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Yes, using a condom alone is not always enough, although it does protect you completely. Genital warts caused by HPV (human papilloma virus), herpes caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus), and rarely even hepatitis B and C viruses can get transmitted through contact even after using a condom. Most people do acquire immunity to herpes infection through subclinical exposure. Studies have shown the majority of the population shows IgG antibodies toward herpes. You could watch for any lesions, such as fluid-filled tiny vesicles over the genitalia, which usually develop two to five days after exposure. I hope this information will help. Thanks.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
