Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I experienced vaginal bleeding today. I had protected sex for the first time nine days back, but the condoms came off midway. As a precautionary step, I took a tablet I-pill after six hours of the sex. I had intercourse on the eighth day of my cycle. My menstrual cycle lasts for 28 to 30 days. Is it normal? I am really worried. Please answer my queries;

1) Is spotting or vaginal bleeding normal?

2) When can I expect my periods?

3) Does spotting after six days of taking tablet I-pill mean no pregnancy?

Kindly help.

Hello,

I understand your concern,

Bleeding or spotting after taking tablet I-pill is a side effect, as I-pill contains synthetic progesterone, which causes hormonal imbalance and prevents pregnancy. This hormonal imbalance can cause side effects like spotting, irregular bleeding, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and delayed periods. These side effects vary in individuals and may present as a combination of symptoms or just as one of them. The answer to your questions;

1) Spotting or bleeding is a normal side effect of I-pill, which occurs in some individuals. There is nothing to worry about. It will stop on its own.

2) There may be a slight delay (less than 15 days ) in your regular periods due to the pill, or it may occur on your regular period time. If there is a delay of more than 15 days, kindly do a pregnancy test.

3) Bleeding or spotting is not an indicator of whether the pill has worked or not. Only your next regular period is an indicator.

I hope this was useful.

Thanks.
