HomeAnswersObstetrics and Gynecologysingle embryo transferI had a three-day embryo transfer, and I currently take hCG medications, but after 12 days my pregnancy test was positive. Is it due to hCG medications?

Does taking hCG medications affect the pregnancy test results?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am at day 12 post the day-three embryo transfer. I am taking hCG injection 5 units daily from the day of transfer. Today I have done a home pregnancy urine test and it shows positive. Is the positive result due to hCG medication?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for trusting us with your health care. I have gone through your history in detail and understand your concerns. As per your description, these symptoms could be due to hormonal imbalance but they could be due to pregnancy also. Though the chances are very low. Yes, it could be a false positive result. But as you missed your period it could be an anovulatory cycle due to hormonal changes or due to pregnancy (if precum contains sperm) You should go for blood beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) testing to rule out pregnancy right now. If pregnancy is not there it could be due to hormonal imbalance and you can wait and watch for your menses or can take progesterone for withdrawal bleeding. Get your thyroid profile and hemoglobin test also for any hormonal changes. Hope found this useful, feel free to ask for more information.

Thank you.
