Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I use the sinus rinse device to clear out my nasal cavity and sinus cavity, but every time I use it, I am left with painful head and eye pressure. All, so my eyes become bloodshot red and stingy? Do you have any idea why this is happening?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Please answer a few questions. What is the reason why you are using the sinus rinse? Are you suffering from sinusitis or nasal obstruction? Any history of previous nasal surgery? Was there any bleeding post doing the rinse? Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yes, I had septoplasty surgery one month ago. There was bleeding the first few times after surgery but not now.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Since it has been a month post-surgery, there is no need to continue any sinus rinse. The purpose of giving a rinse post nasal surgery is that due to surgery, the nose develops some crusts inside, which is the natural course of healing. However, these crusts may sometimes block your nasal passages by causing synechiae. So the doctor would have prescribed these rinses only to prevent this complication. The intranasal wound of your surgery would have entirely healed by approximately 15 to 20 days, so there is no need to continue the rinse. The nasal cavity has an excellent mucociliary clearance system, so we need not do any rinses regularly. The pain you were feeling will be due to sinusitis from the rinses, and I suggest you stop it. That will take care of everything. Please contact me anytime if you have any other queries. I hope you find it helpful. Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Do you know why my eyes become red and stingy after using the solution? This is because the saline solution only goes up my nose and not into my eyes.

Answered by Dr. Akshay. B. K.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, please do not worry. The irritation in your eyes and redness will be due to the activation of the parasympathetic system inside the nose due to irrigation. It is bound to happen in some people, so do not worry as you stop the rinses, things will settle down. There is a definite bony partition called lamina papyracea inside your nose, which separates your nasal cavity from your eyes, so there is no way the rinse could have entered your eyes. I hope you find it helpful. Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Could it enter the eye through the tear duct?

Answered by Dr. Akshay. B. K.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. No, it is not possible as the tear duct, also called as nasolacrimal duct (NLD), opens in the inferior meatus that is present below your inferior turbinate, and also NLD is also guarded by a mucosal valve called Hasner's valve, so there is no way the water could enter your eyes through NLD. Please let me know if you have any other queries. I hope you find it helpful. Kind regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
