Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Eight days ago, I used my nail polish remover (Acetone), which had a very strong smell. Till today, all of the smells and tastes are mixed with the smell of Acetone. Even when I smell nothing, the Acetone smell is stuck in my nasopharynx. I should mention that I was a COVID-19 patient two months ago and lost the taste and smell for 20 days. It is so annoying now to smell that Acetone even though I do not have Acetone anywhere around me. I am a medical student and tried to figure it out by searching about it, but unfortunately, I did not find any explanation for this case. So I need a solution, please. Kind regards.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate that the pathways of smell and taste are closely linked. To perceive a flavor, you need coordinated functioning of both receptors for smell and taste. Inflammation by virus infections or injuries can damage the mucus membranes and the receptors or even nerve endings. Acetone caused a chemical injury. Receptors generally regenerate if the damage is mild. Take Becosules-Z one capsule daily after dinner for two weeks. Drink adequate water and make sure you are adequately hydrated so that the urine volume is more than 1 liter daily. Gargle your mouth with warm salt water at night regularly. Avoid icecreams or cool drinks. Review after ten days.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
