Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a sore throat and a mild earache for a week. I have noticed that next to my uvula, there is a white lump that is very red and inflamed (image attached). I have poked it to see if anything comes out, but it does not seem to. I have had tonsillitis before, but it did not seem like this. Do you know what it could be, and should I be concerned about it? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The lump in the picture (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) looks like inflamed lymphatic tissue over the soft palate, usually during a viral upper respiratory tract infection or viral pharyngitis. Our pharynx and palate have many lymphatic tissues known as pharyngeal lymphatic bands, which can get inflamed during a generalized pharyngeal inflammation. However, it is not of any significant concern. If it is painful, then mild analgesic like tablet Acetaminophen is sufficient. Most of these are self-resolving. However, if it is extremely painful, a course of antibiotics is recommended due to the chances of secondary bacterial infection. If it is painless, then it will resolve in a couple of weeks. Thank you.
