Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father had an allergic reaction yesterday evening where he had reddish patches all over his tummy and back with a lot of itching, and also, his lips were swollen. Not sure if it was due to food or something else. We took him to the doctor, and the doctor gave him an Avil injection and Dexona injection of 8 mg last night, after which the itching stopped, and we could see a lot of improvement. He also prescribed Avil 25 mg thrice daily for two days and Predmet 4 twice daily for one day and then once the next day. Since morning, there has been no itching or any sign of an allergy. As advised, he has taken Avil 25 in the morning and afternoon and Predmet 4 mg in the morning. Because of Dexona and Predmet, his sugars are high. Morning fasting was 238 mg/dL, and RBS was 350 mg/dL.

Since the allergy is not there, can he stop Predmet now and continue with Avil alone. Of course, you should not suddenly stop a steroid, so can he stop now or lower the dose? He had taken Dexona 8 mg injection yesterday night and has taken Predmet 4 mg in the morning. He is a CABG patient and has also had a stroke in the past. He is taking Mixtard Insulin 30/70, 42 units morning and 12 units at night, Glycomet-GP 2 twice daily, Linagliptin 5 mg once in the morning, Fibator 10 mg at night, Metolar 25 one tablet in the morning, Dynapress 0.4 mg at night, Arreno twice daily, Ecosprin 75 mg once in the morning, Thyronorm 25 mg one tablet from Monday to Thursday and two tablets from Friday to Sunday.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Most commonly, this happens due to food allergies only. He should try to recall all things he had consumed, including medicines, allergic exposure, etc. Yes, certainly, he can stop if his symptoms are better. Steroid tapering is advisable if taken for a long time, say more than one or two weeks. Tapering is not required for one to two days and can be stopped. Do not worry about sugars; they will come to normal in two to three days.

I hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Do we need to continue with Avil also? Also on Friday he has a dental procedure. Will taking steroid for this short duration matter?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would suggest you continue with Avil (Pheniramine) till all his symptoms resolve or continue for three to four days. It will not affect his dental procedure on Friday.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
