Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been battling what I think is stomach flu, but not for sure. I do not have vomiting anymore but still have abdominal issues like slight discomfort, and my poop is not normal yet. My body is paining, and I get fatigued. This all started at the beginning of this week. I am thinking of stomach flu because my co-worker came into work last week, and he left work early as he was dealing with vomit and diarrhea. This fatigue bothers me the most, plus the achy feeling in my body. I went to the doctor, and they did an abdominal CT scan, and it showed no real abnormal signs. The doctor said it is the viral inflammation of the intestines. I am currently taking Pepto-Bismal syrup and antacids.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms seem of irritable bowel syndrome, or in other words, stomach flu. So, the transit of bowels and stomach became very fast, causing bloating, gas, and altered stools to form with plus-minus some pain. This is another wise common thing that can occur after having some food with possible bacterial or viral contamination. Otherwise, any viral infection of the throat can cause this bowel syndrome to appear. In the latter case, it is called post-infection irritable bowel syndrome. Therefore, I suggest you take the following medications:

1. Tablet Rifaximin (antibiotic) 200 mg thrice daily for seven days.

2. Tablet Colofac (Mebeverine) 135 mg thrice daily before meals.

3. Capsule Esomeprazole (antacid) 40 mg once daily a half hour before meals.

4. Isabgol husk (Psyllium husk) two tablespoons full with one glass of water daily. Consult a specialist, talk with them and take the medications withtheir consent.

I suggest you use all medications for a week and let me know the symptoms after that. All reports are normal, mainly a CT (computerized tomography) scan of the abdomen. The fluid-filled small bowel loops are a common finding and do not herald a disease process.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

I usually show low lipase levels, Does any raise for concern?

Please help.

Answered by Dr. Ajeet Kumar

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No, it is not abnormal and does not raise any concern. High levels of lipase, mainly three times rise in its values, are a concern and suggest pancreatitis. Your values are fine.

I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
