Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 5-year-old son recently had a tummy bug. He was complaining of tummy ache and fatigue two weeks before. He was fine the next day but woke up several times that night due to tummy pain. The next day, he got really tired after school and was nauseous. He fell sick around five times that evening. He was also sick on the following day. Since then, he has been experiencing fatigue and sleeps around 13 to 14 hours a day. He used to sleep 10 hours a day before the illness. He has pain around his belly button every evening and night. He does not have fever or diarrhea. He has slight constipation, which is fine, but it is yellow-colored when he goes. I have never seen him be so disinterested in playing. He remains tired and irritable (easily upset). Now I wonder if there is more to it than just a tummy bug?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing, and I can understand your concern. It can be food poisoning or infection of the intestine, due to which dull pain and discomfort are seen. So, I suggest you get a stool sample culture test and complete blood count (CBC) done to rule out infection. The probable cause is food poisoning. The differential diagnosis is intestinal infection and the probable diagnosis is abdominal pain. Please give him soft foods, fruits, and green vegetables. Avoid spicy food and red meat. Try to drink plenty of fluids. Are you giving him any medicine currently? Please let me know so that I can prescribe you medicine accordingly.

Thank you.
