Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a healthy and active 17 year old female. I have swelling in my right calf or lower leg when sitting. There is no foot swelling. The swelling is present in the calf and it goes away within an hour if I move around. I do have night sweats. I get easily bruised, feel constantly cold and fatigue. I was ruled out for circulation problem and varicose veins. My blood tests show positive ANA, slightly low WBC and RBC, and slightly anemic. This leg swelling has been happening for the last two months.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. The swelling can be attributed to either venous or lymphatic reasons. Assuming you've undergone a venous Doppler for deep vein thrombosis and the results were normal, the remaining consideration is a lymphatic cause. To further explore this, it's recommended to undergo lymphoscintigraphy and thyroid testing. Meanwhile, reducing salt intake is advised. Given the positive ANA (antinuclear antibody) mentioned, it's important to also undergo testing for anti-dsDNA. This evaluation is crucial for assessing the potential presence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Additionally, investigating the cause of anemia, which can exacerbate swelling, involves obtaining vitamin B12, folic acid, and iron studies. To alleviate the swelling, consider placing a pillow under your legs during sleep. Consulting a medical professional for these evaluations is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
