Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 16-year-old male. Three days ago, I had the thought of my parent's death while in bed at night. It generally makes me sad, but this time the thought stayed and I eventually started overthinking about the death of my loved ones and how my parents will be left alone when I move for college. I am not really the kind of person to miss someone a lot or care about deaths much but for the last three days I feel very low, and exhausted and feel like there is no purpose in doing anything. I cannot sleep at night because negative thoughts swarm my brain. This has never occurred to me before, and while talking to my parents helped a lot, I cannot seem to function properly like before. Also, my libido seems to have dropped to zero which I think is really abnormal for someone my age. I do not take any medications. I just want to know if this is something normal or the start of depression.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your situation.

You may have major depressive disorder due to overthinking. You should follow the lifestyle mentioned below to deal with your depression as it will help you.

1. You should exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk.

2. You should meditate for 20 minutes every day. Just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts, just let them be. It will calm you.

3. You should eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.

4. You must drink enough water.

5. You should spend quality time with friends and family or do video calls as you are planning to move to college.

6. You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, languages, or musical instruments.

7. You should take 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.

8. You must avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.

9. Live your life, do not just spend it. Be bold and confident.

You must get the following blood reports and follow up after one week.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please, let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.

1. CBC (complete blood count). 2. Thyroid profile. 3. Vitamin B12. 4. Vitamin D3. 5. Serum testosterone. 6. Serum prolactin.
