Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife has been suffering from arthritis for the last six years. We visited many doctors, but she did not get proper relief. Recently, my wife started taking Arava 20 mg and many others. We were told to avoid pregnancy while taking this medicine. But, my wife is 2 months pregnant now and she has taken Arava for one month. I do like to know whether this medicine is safe in pregnancy or not. What are the harms if we carry a pregnancy? Also, is there any way to wash out this medicine? Please share your opinion.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We are here to help you. Arava (Leflunomide) is a teratogenic drug and should not be used in pregnancy. Also, one should not plan to conceive for at least after two years of stopping the drug. In cases like you, one option is to abort and the second is to take the risk of fetal malformation. In early pregnancy, we use Cholestyramine to eliminate the drug, but the pregnancy duration of two months is advanced. Consult your doctor. I would not recommend carrying a pregnancy further. Share my opinion with your doctor before you act upon it.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
