Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a cold for the last 7 to 8 days and a little bit of irritation in my throat. 4 to 5 days back, while moving my fingers on the neck under the chin, I felt mild swelling in the lymph node on both sides; it is a submandibular lymph node, I presume. There is no pain, only little swelling which is palpable by fingers. I got it checked by my family physician, who said it might be due to a viral infection, flu, or cold. I was advised to do Betadine gargles. I have no fever. What treatment do you suggest for it, and how long will it take to go away?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

With cold and throat irritation for 8 days with lymph node swelling indicates an infection. It could be viral or bacterial. You need some antibiotics for pain and swelling. I suggest you consult a specialist and take the medications with their consent.

1) Tablet Azithromycin 500 mg once daily for 3 days.

2) Tablet Chymoral Forte (Trypsin Chymotrypsin) thrice daily for 3 days.

3) Tablet Combiflam (Ibuprofen and Paracetamol) twice daily for 3 days.

If the cold and swelling do not subside, go for investigations like CBC (complete blood count) and throat swab culture and sensitivity.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you.

I will take the medicines and get back to you after three days. I do not have pain or fever. Do I still need Combiflam?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, lymph node enlargement is there, so you need anti-inflammatory drugs.

Take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last year in July, I got a flu vaccine for protection against flu, but I still got this infection, so might it be due to some bacteria? But bacterial infection causes a high fever, which I do not have. Do you think this vaccine is effective?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Symptoms and signs may depend on bacterial virulence. Pain and lymph adenitis is enough for bacterial infection. Do not worry. Take medicines for only 3 days, and we will review after that.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I consulted you for cold and throat irritation with mild lymph node enlargement. I took the medication as prescribed by you for three days. Cold and throat irritation and congestion have subsided. Lymph node swelling has reduced a bit, and I have no other complaints. I consulted my family doctor, and he advised me to take Tablet Azithromycin for 2 more days. He said the lymph node should return to normal size slowly in the next 10 to 15 days.

Kindly advise if I should continue the medicine.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, lymph nodes take time to become normal in size. You can take Azithrocin (Azithromycin) 500 mg for two more days as advised by your physician. Along with it, take Chymoroal Forte (Trypsin Chymotrypsin) twice for one day and Combiflam (Ibuprofen and Paracetamol) twice daily for 2 days.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
