Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a slight sore throat on the left side, my tonsil on that side seems slightly larger, it looks like tonsillitis, and I also have some teardrop-shaped swellings on the arch in front of the tonsil. I do have sore mouth regularly due to hypothyroidism. I am most concerned about the bumps or lumps and wonder if I should be worried. Currently I am taking tablets Levothyroxine, Ciclesonide inhaler, and tablet Lisdexamfetamine. Please help. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, do not worry, it is a minor condition of tonsils. It can be tonsilloliths or just crypts filled with debris. If the pain increases, I suggest antibiotics like tablet Amoxiclav 625 mg (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid) twice daily. Kindly maintain your oral hygiene using a Chlorhexidine mouthwash or Betadine mouth wash. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

What would those teardrop-shaped lumps or swellings in front of the tonsil on the photo be? They are not related to the tonsil stone, and I did not know if they are normal structures. The other side does not look like that. Why? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As per the photo attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), tonsils look a bit congested; otherwise, it seems normal. That tear-shaped swelling is just debris in a tonsillar crypt in the initial stage of tonsillolith. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Sorry to ask again, but can I clarify we are talking about these two swellings (seen in the photo)? I am very happy that you do not see anything to worry about, but I want to check that this is good.

There is nothing abnormal. It is just your tonsils. Do not worry. Thank you.
