Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am suffering from a throat infection. Therefore, I have taken five doses of medicine Leeflox (250 mg), Atarax 10 mg, and Panadol. But still, I am feeling pain in my throat. Moreover, I also suffer from a cough due to a dry throat. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Your chief complaints are throat pain and dryness. Most cases of sore throat are due to viral infections. Nevertheless, bacterial infections need to be ruled out. The dryness can be due to the illness and the Atarax (Hydroxyzine) tablets you take. I suggest the following investigations, 1. Throat swab for gram stain. 2. Culture and sensitivity. If the throat swab report is positive for bacteria, targeted antibiotics must be given. Our experience suggests that most bacterial sore throats respond to Amoxycillin 500 mg thrice a day for five to seven days. If the report comes negative, the viral infection needs to be suspected. In that case, it resolves within a few days, though dry cough may persist for about two to three weeks. After that, Paracetamol and Levocetirizine may suffice. I hope this helps. Kind regards.

Differential diagnosis

The differential diagnoses are bacterial pharyngitis and viral pharyngitis.

Probable diagnosis

The probable diagnoses are acute Streptococcal sore throat.
