Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 4 weeks pregnant, and my hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels have doubled in 3 days, but my doctor has told me to take thyroid medication. I am currently living abroad, which creates a communication barrier so that I would like to have a second opinion. My TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels are 5.2, but My FT3 (free Triiodothyronine) is at 4.8, and my FT4 (free Thyroxine) is at 13.5. I have been prescribed 50 mcg of Levothyroxine Sodium tablets take one daily. What would you say to that?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy.

In the first three months of your pregnancy (First trimester), your TSH levels should be less than 2.5 (irrespective of t4 and t3 levels ). This level is required for the normal development of the baby's thyroid and nervous system and also for the continuation of the pregnancy. Hence any imbalance in these levels can lead to complications like miscarriages, hypothyroidism, neural defects in the baby, and preterm delivery. Since your TSH level is 5.2 (high), your doctor has prescribed 50 mcg of Levothyroxine.

I suggest you kindly take the medication and follow up on your TSH levels regularly (as per the doctor's advice).

I hope this was useful.

Regards.
