Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The back of my tongue on the right side has been bothering me for the last few days. That side seems slightly red and irritated. I am 33 years old. I never smoke, rarely drink (maybe four times a year), and no HPV. I am currently taking Metoprolol.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the images (attachment removed to protect patient identity). The tongue look fine.

What is bothering you? Is there pain or irritation? There seems to be no inflammation as such. Some spots seen on the side of the tongue are normal soft mucosa of the tongue. Please be clear about the exact symptoms you are having to help in a clear diagnosis.

Press the concerned area to check if you find any hard mass which is different from the opposite sides. Also, press hard to check if there is any tenderness.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

No hardness at all. It just feels like something is stuck on my tongue. And one of the taste buds seems to be dangling a bit (I do have a fissured tongue that is wide) so I am wondering if it is possible I did accidentally do something to it. No pain just irritating. Should I gargle saltwater to help it?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, you could use a warm saltwater gargle. Sometimes some taste buds are overdeveloped and may seem enlarged but no need to worry about it. They will be normal in a few weeks. Sometimes heat and cold or acidic food cause some changes in tongue epithelium. All changes are temporary, so do not worry.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
