Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old, not an athlete or obese. During resting, especially at night, my heart rate is as low as 50 bpm. I feel perfectly fine; the only way I notice it is by checking it. During the day, I checked it, and it was 85 bpm. While at work and exercising, it gets up to 150 bpm. It is during the night it gets to 50 bpm. Could this be a heart block? I do not have any health problems. I did CBC and thyroid tests, and the results came back normal. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to Icliniq.com.

If you have been working out extensively, like going to the gym or running, it can cause a lower heart rate than others. Your heart rate naturally drops in sleep or when you are more rested than when you are physically active. The fact that you have been able to increase your heart rate during regular work hours is a good sign. If your heart rate stays low despite doing physical activity, then I would suggest seeing a cardiologist or a primary care doctor to get a baseline EKG (electrocardiogram). Right now, I think it should be considered harmless unless you have symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, or feeling like you are about to pass out.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
