Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have one white spot on my right tonsil, I do not have any fever. What medicine can I take?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is common to have white spots over the enlarged tonsils. Unless the tonsil is inflamed or it is troubling you, it is not required for you to take any antibiotics or painkillers. You can follow the advice given below:

1. Salt water gargles at least 8 to 10 times a day for one month.

2. Avoid oily spicy and cold food/beverages.

3. Keep sipping on boiled warm water every three hours.

Tonsils have some crevices on it what we call as crypts, food particles can often get lodged in those crypts which often appear to be white spots. If there is excessive accumulation, over time they can get calcified to form stones what we call as tonsiloliths. All precautionary measures have to be followed as much as possible to prevent infection of the tonsils.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you. By the way my right tonsil is quite inflammed. Is it fine not to take any medicine?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I did have a look at the pictures you have sent (attachment removed to protect patient identity). Yes, it is definitely inflammed. However, when it is infected you will have pain and that will require antibiotics. Antibiotics just resolve the infection, but in a structure like the tonsil, the hypertrophy (increased size) of the structure usually remains and does not regress in size.

I do not really suggest you to take antibiotics as of now. Even if you consider taking antibiotics, that white spot most likely will not disappear. My advice to you would be not to get too worried about the white spot as it is very common and is not dangerous. As I said, make sure you follow a strict diet, avoid alcohol, smoking, do not have cold, spicy and oily food items, regular salt water gargles 8 to 10 times a day for as long as you can will go a long way.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Is it necessary to use warm water for the salt that I will use for gargle? Can I also use Bactidol? For gargle? And how often if I can use Bactidol?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Salt in warm water increases the efficiency of the gargles and prevents any sort of biofilm formation over the throat (which is required for bacteria to cause a very severe infection). If you feel uncomfortable with salt in water, you can use plain warm water as well (which is slightly less effective). In addition, you can also use Bactidol 3 days a week. As such Bactidol being antiseptic will be only of more use during an infection and not otherwise.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
