Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed some purple and black areas underneath my tonsils far down my throat. Are they veins? Or is it normal? I coughed hard and noticed these after. I am not sure if I am noticing. I do get reflux and trouble swallowing sometimes. I have my tonsils intact. They are small. I am getting some mild pain in the area. Could that be due to stretching the muscles to see? I am currently on Lansoprazole and Gaviscon.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the pictures (attachment removed to protect patient identity). I see that you are normal. That blue area is just veins. The prominent red arteries are because of severe cough and recurrent reflux. Continue Lansoprazole and avoid cold and spicy foods. I think that the mild pain you have is because of reflux, cough, and severe stretching of the tongue and mouth muscles.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

The veins look like a bruise. Are they big veins under the skin? Why are they more prominent on one side? How come I do not see any black/blue areas in online tonsil photos? Is it common to see such big blue veins beneath the skin in this area?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is a normal anatomical variation. You can perform neck ultrasonography to be completely sure that everything is normal. I saw some people with the same anatomical variation.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
