Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had my wisdom tooth extracted yesterday. The doctor prescribed Prednisolone 40 mg BD, Clindamycin 300 mg BD, Vitamin C 100 mg TDS, Antalgex T BD, and Metronidazole 400 mg TDS for five to seven days. Is this not too much? I do not want to have side effects, and I do not want it to affect my heart because I had a successful surgery years ago. However, my hands were shaking when I took the drugs this morning. Can I reduce the dosage?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Usually, I would not suggest Prednisone and Metronidazole for wisdom tooth extraction. You may continue the other medicines. Still, I do not know in which specific condition has your dentist prescribed Prednisone. Do you have any other health issues unrelated to wisdom tooth infection?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I have asthma. I have already taken these drugs twice, and my jaw is really swollen, as seen in the picture. I am about to take my night dosage of the drugs. If I do not use Prednisone for the inflammation, what else can I use, or should I reduce the dosage for this night? Why should I stop Metronidazole? I was also prescribed Clindamycin with it. Please reply.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Steroids such as Prednisolone helps in reducing inflammation, so you can continue as your dentist says, but I prefer other medications for it instead of steroids. They have some side effects, so it is avoided as much as possible. You can continue all medications, even Metronidazole, for at least five days for faster healing. We suggest Serratiopeptidase for inflammation, and Clindamycin may have been enough as an antibiotic unless you had a severe abscess for which Metronidazole may have been prescribed.

Thank you.
