I still have pain after days of extraction. Does that mean there is infection?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a cleft lip and palate patient. I have gone through a tooth extraction four days back. I am still suffering from severe pain. My dentist prescribed tablet Chymoral Forte and tablet Zerodol for pain relief, but it is of no help. So, please suggest some way to get relief from pain. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would like to know a few details more on this incident. Which one and why was the tooth extracted? Cavity, pain, swelling, or other reasons? Was any medication given to you before extraction to reduce infection, if present? Was it a painless extraction, the entire tooth extracted without any fragments remaining behind, and pain started later? Did you follow all instructions given by the doctor, mainly of not spitting, not using straws, no carbonated drinks, etc. These would help you know your situation better. Regarding medication, Chymoral Forte (Trypsin and Chymotrypsin)is prescribed to reduce swelling and infection. Thus it should help in improving the situation. But if pain persists, you might have developed a situation known as "dry socket," or it could be any other hidden cause or just a pain incident taking time to wear off. It would need immediate attention. Kindly visit your doctor to get it checked. Meanwhile, you can gargle with saline water for home remedies and keep the socket area as clean as possible. Please do not put any mechanical tools to clean it. Just rinse with warm water 4 to 5 times a day. If you cannot visit your doctor, you will need medication to subside your pain, but a clinical assessment as soon as possible is recommended. Where there any other drugs prescribed along with the tablet Chymoral Forte? Thank you.

Preventive measures

Keep doing warm saline rinses and maintain oral hygiene.
