A transesophageal echocardiogram is a diagnostic tool that picturizes heart movements with the help of an ultrasound. It is used to diagnose heart valve diseases, myocardial diseases, pericardial diseases, infective endocarditis, and congenital heart diseases. It takes 90 minutes, during which an endoscope is inserted from the mouth down the esophagus to guide the ultrasound transducer.
