Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 40-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis, diagnosed seven years back. I am currently taking Mesacol 4000 mg daily, but my bleeding has not stopped for the last five months. My body has gotten used to Deltacartel. Without it, my stool passes with blood and mucus in large quantities. I am worried as I do not want to take steroids on a daily basis.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The target of treating ulcerative colitis is to stop the bloody bowel motions. The treatment of acute exacerbation includes IV (intravenous) steroids and an oral course. After controlling the acute exacerbation, upgrading the maintenance therapy is required. As you are already on Mesacol (Mesalamine) and steroids, Azithioprine needs to be added. Please consult your physician about adding Azithioprine or Infliximab. Surgery is the last option.

Wish you all well-being. For further advice please don't hesitate to follow up.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
