Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Recently, I had unprotected sex. The first time, we both were drunk, but I know I did not ejaculate. Also, we did not use any form of contraception. She was ovulating during the second time and I used the withdrawal method. What are the chances that she can get pregnant?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Well, ovulation is the period wherein egg is released from the ovary and that needs a single sperm to head towards a pregnancy. There is about 30% chance of getting pregnant following unprotected sex during ovulation. How can you be so sure about her ovulation? Did she use any ovulation predictor kit? Or was she in her mid cycle? If you are sure about 100% withdrawal, then the chance of getting pregnant may drop down. I would like to share a fact about pre-ejaculatory fluid, precum. It is impossible for a man to know when microscopic escape of sperm commences. I remind you that it takes only one sperm to fertilize an egg. I do not intend to scare you, but do take this as a gentle advice not to prefer pulling-out techniques especially during and around ovulation. When did you indulge in sex (precise date)? She can have I-pill within 72 hours, preferably within 24 hours or as early as possible to avoid unwanted pregnancy. It is safe and does not affect her future fertility except for mild immediate nausea. I would also advise her to go for a urine pregnancy test about 14 days after intercourse if she does not get her periods.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I urinated between each session, multiple times. I am not sure how much that clears out the precum. Based on her cycle she was either ovulating or the day before ovulation. She is one day late for her period now, but she tells me that she is fine and knows it is coming soon.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. Hope she gets her periods soon and she will mostly get them any date during this week. Symptoms like breast tenderness and lower abdominal pain or abdominal cramps are some of the premenstrual signs. If not, then go for a urine pregnancy test. As I have told you previously do not rely on withdrawal technique during and around ovulation. You can club it with the use of barrier methods like latex condoms, which will also protect you from STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Are the symptoms of pregnancy and premenstrual cycle relatively the same? How could she possibly know it is coming?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. Both premenstrual and pregnancy appears similar. Hard to differentiate based on the symptoms, I agree. Morning sickness or extreme nausea is the one that is the more specific symptom of pregnancy. Food cravings are common in PMS (premenstrual syndrome). The best way to differentiate is to take a urine pregnancy test if she missed her period. She may wait till seven days post expected date as period is usually not accurate.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

If she feels morning sickness or extreme nausea, then can we safely say she is pregnant? What about if she has a period, but is just spotting instead of a full blown one?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. Usually a full blown period indicates menstrual period and vaginal spotting is inconclusive. To get rid of your anxiety, just go for UPT with some pregnancy kit available in the medical dispensary.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
