Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had oral sex with my partner, but not sure whether I fingered her with my semen hands or not. So she took the tablet Unwanted-72 to be on the safe side. She got her periods within five to six days after taking the pill.

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since it was oral sex and then you are worried about pregnancy owing to semen in your hand, let me assure you that there is no chance of pregnancy as per details shared by you. I would like you to share with me the details of her last two menstrual period cycle lengths and if she has any history of irregular periods for a better assessment of her condition. Emergency contraceptive pills are hormones based, and they have this known side effect of bleeding in certain females. So, I would also like to know if the bleeding she experienced after five to six days of pill dose was similar to her periods or lighter, as the side effect is much lesser in most cases.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

She got her periods seventeen days back. On the eleventh day, we had oral sex, and within the next 23 hours, she took the Unwanted-72 pill (on the next day). After two days, she faced lower abdominal cramps, then right after six days, she got dark brown spotting, and from the next day, she had bleeding more of red color with a little tint of brown in it. Sometimes she has liquidy blood and sometimes blood clots too (fairly smaller in size). Can we consider this withdrawal bleeding as periods or not? If not, then when can we expect the next periods? Besides this, she has no history of irregular periods.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. If it was thirteen days back that her periods got over and then she has no history of irregular periods, then firstly, there is no chance of pregnancy. Secondly, it may be withdrawal bleeding. Further, the side effects of the emergency contraceptive pill include delay in periods by upto 15 days for some females. So do not worry, it is normal in some females. With the period ending thirteen days back, there is no possibility of ovulation (egg release), so there is no need to worry about pregnancy.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

As you can see from the history above, my partner got periods twice in the last one and a half months. She got her last period nine months back, but she did not get her period the following month. Kindly brief me about it. What can be the reason for this? Is she pregnant? Or are these the side effects of the Unwanted-72 pill?

Please give your suggestions.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and will surely help you.

As a result of the emergency contraceptive pill, she had some bleeding. Further, she has not had any period that you have been expecting. She has been delayed by almost a month. Although, as discussed earlier, pregnancy is not possible with the details shared by you, and if she had conceived, she would have developed signs of pregnancy, like breast tenderness, nausea, etc., by now. Please ask her if she has any pregnancy symptoms. If she does not have any pregnancy symptoms can be attributed to the emergency contraceptive pill side effects or anxiety she must be undergoing due to pregnancy fear. Tell her not to be stressed and to stay cheerful.

If she has no history of irregular periods, she should be getting her periods anytime soon. However, I suggest you get a blood hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test to detect pregnancy. If the results are negative, she will be relieved and medicines can be prescribed to initiate periods. Do not worry.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if you have any questions.

Thanks and regards.
