Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother had a urinary infection caused by Escherichia coli. She was treated with a 10 days course of Nitrofurantoin. The count of bacteria in her urine then was 500 hpf and 50 WBCs. Her symptoms were relieved. But after a week, she feels slight burning sensation now. During the infection period and now she has been having an urge to go to the toilet quite often and some irritation while passing the stools too. The stool is watery. We got her routine blood tests done and her WBC count in blood is slightly higher. She has no fever. Please advice.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I reviewed all the attached reports (attachments removed to protect patient identity).

Your mother has the stomach irritation and loose stools due to the medicines she had taken. She will be relieved from this in 2 or 3 days. She has iron deficiency anemia. So, you should give her foods which are rich in iron like spinach, red meat, and eggs. Also, you should give her plenty of fluids and cranberry juice. This will help her in her urinary tract infection (UTI). I suggest the following medicines for her.

  1. Tablet Shelcal (calcium plus vitamin D) once a day for 15 days.
  2. Tablet Feronia XT (combination of Iron and Folic acid), once a day for 30 days.
  3. Tablet Oflox-OZ (combination of Ofloxacin and Ornidazole) twice a day for five days.
