Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got my first urinary tract infection (UTI) around seven years back. My urethra was inflamed and swollen. I got on antibiotics and then it got better. I had this lump that stayed and never went back. Since then I have been prone to UTI right after sexual intercourse. Before, I kept it in control by peeing after sex. Now, I get UTI no matter what. I have been sick a lot recently. Last year I got an ear infection twice, an eye infection, a throat infection, and UTI thrice. I just feel like I am not okay. I had sex two weeks back. I got another UTI even after peeing right after the intercourse and took antibiotics again. Right now I am feeling better but the lump is sensitive and there is a burning sensation when I pee. I got a cystoscope and the report was normal. My question is: What is this lump? Is it cancer or a caruncle? Also, why do I have recurrent UTIs now? Is cancer making me sick so often? What can I do?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. The lump is the inflamed gland of Bartholin, which is present in the urethra. Once it gets blocked it will form a cyst, and this cyst gets inflamed after intercourse giving you a burning sensation like a urinary tract infection. The treatment can be the removal of the gland under local anesthesia. Sometimes this gland ruptures in the urethra and cause diverticulum, causing repeated UTIs. You will need physical consultation and treatment. Creams and medications will not help.

Thank you.
