Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was recently told that my 21-month-old son needed to repeat his three most recent vaccines, including polio, DTAP, and the flu shot. However, the provider informed me that the fridge which held the vaccines was not cold enough, so my son is only considered to have a partial dose. Should I repeat the vaccines or not? And should not the fridge temperature be something that is checked daily? How am I finding out about this 39 days later? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Repeating the vaccine may be required in this case because we are not sure if the vaccines that the child has taken were at 100 % efficacy or lesser because of the non-maintenance of the cold chain. The fridge temperature is checked daily, but in some cases, it may stop working out of the blue even after it has been checked. It would become difficult for a doctor who has been busy the whole day with patients to keep a check on that. This happens sometimes. In your case, the person giving you the vaccine is trying to be sure and safe for both your baby and himself or herself by giving an additional dose of the vaccine 40 days later (from the previous vaccine). That way, there would be a lesser chance of an overdose, and the efficacy of these new vaccines that would be given would be 100 %. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
