Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 16-year-old female and I have been suffering from thrush for over a year now. I am not sure if it is thrush or not because it becomes extremely itchy often. I know it is not any STIs or anything because I have been tested already twice. It also caused me a loss of interest in sexual contact as it is very painful afterwards.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

How are you doing?

What other symptoms do you have? Any vaginal discharge?

Can I see the photo of the thrush?

It looks like you have been experiencing recurrent episodes of vaginal yeast infections, commonly known as thrush. Vaginal yeast infections can be caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus that normally lives in the vagina in small amounts.

Other possible differential diagnosis include,

1. Bacterial vaginosis.

2. Skin infection.

3. Sexually transmitted disease.

4. Have you got any blood investigations done? If available can you show them to me?

The treatment options include,

Over-the-counter antifungal lotions. You might also need oral antifungals as per the size of the lesion.

I advise you to,

1. Change your daily habits, such as avoiding scented soaps.

2. Using condoms during sexual intercourse.

3. It is important to continue using your chosen method of contraception, but be aware that certain contraceptives, such as hormonal birth control pills or devices, can increase the risk of developing yeast infections.

In the meantime, you can try to relieve your symptoms with over-the-counter antifungal creams, cold compresses, and wearing cotton underwear to keep the area dry and avoid tight-fitting clothing. Avoiding sugary foods and drinks may also help prevent the growth of Candida in the vagina.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
