Can a doctor determine virginity by examining the vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can a doctor find if someone is a virgin just by looking at the vaginal wall? What is the circle in the image that I have attached? Does it have anything to do with virginity?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

What you see in the image (attachment removed to protect patient's identity) is an intact hymen. The black or dark circle is a hymenal opening through which the menstrual blood flows or the tampon is inserted. The hymen is a layer of mucosa (skin lining), a remnant of the developing reproductive tract when the fetus is in the growing stage. It acts as a barrier. The hymen is usually broken or torn on initiation of intercourse hence considered a sign of virginity. But hymen can be broken by various day-to-day activities like a fall from the bike, sports injuries, horse riding, masturbation. Some women are born without hymen.

I hope this helps.
