What could be wrong if a person's sight is normal with and weak without glasses?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a weak eyesight problem, and I started to use glasses just two months before. When I take off my glasses, it seems like my eyesight has become weaker, but everything is perfect when I put on my glasses. What is the problem with me? I do not want to use glasses. Is there any other way to get rid of weak eyesight without using glasses?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This is a normal phenomenon when you use your glasses for the first time. Before using glasses, the eye squeezes itself and partly corrects the vision defect by itself, but that results in eye strain. After you start using glasses, the eye stops straining and squeezing because the eye is able to see clearly, so the asthenopia symptoms disappear. It is also an indication that your glasses prescription is correct. Regarding other options for correction of refractive error, there are contact lenses prescription and refractive surgery routinely done. If the power of your glasses is increasing continuously, you should be worried and have your eyes ruled out for keratoconus. If the power of the glasses is not increasing above a certain limit, you can have refractive surgery, which may give you the freedom to see without glasses or contact lenses. If the glasses have power only in one meridian, there are fewer chances that refractive surgery might be completely helpful, and you might need to use glasses even after the surgery. Do you have your eye examination reports? How frequently do you change glasses? What is the power of the prescription glasses you are using now? Do you experience frequent headaches? I can help you pinpoint your diagnosis if I get some more information on your condition.
