Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 33-year-old male. I was diagnosed to have low vitamin D thrice over a span of five years. My current level is 17 ng/mL, which I understand is below normal. My lifestyle does not permit me to have enough sun exposure. Hence, I think that supplements are the only option. Could you please suggest me the supplements? One gentleman from the medical fraternity suggested a Calciferol sachet once a month for six months. Is it safe? I would not prefer the one with serious side effects. Please review the attached report and let me know your comments.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your investigations (attachment removed to protect patient identity) and you definitely have a low vitamin D levels, which is very common. Obviously, today's lifestyle does not allow us to get adequate exposure to sunlight as a result of which vitamin D synthesis cannot take place in adequate amounts. So, I suggest tablet Citromacalvit (Calcitriol) one tablet once a day for three months, and Calcirol sachet (Cholecalciferol) one sachet per week with a glass of milk for three months. Calcium and vitamin D needs to be taken together because Vitamin D helps in calcium absorption in the body. Subsequently, vitamin D sachets can be taken once a month as a maintenance dose. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicine with consent. As far as your blood tests are concerned, we will again check your thyroid levels after three months. If your TSH levels (thyroid-stimulating hormone) are still very high, then it may require thyroid supplementation as well.

The Probable causes

Lack of exposure to sunlight and sedentary lifestyle.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
