Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 78 years old mother is losing weight, and she got her thyroid test done. The report showed serum free T3: 1.97 pg/ml, serum free T4: 0.34 mg/dl, serum TSH (ultrasensitive): 58.97 uIU/ml. May I request you to please advise the future course of action and medication.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query about your mother and from what you have mentioned it appears that your mother has hypothyroidism. I suggest that you ask her to take tablet Thyronorm 25 mcg (Thyroxine sodium tablets) once daily early in the morning on waking up and then to avoid eating anything for the next one hour. In view of her age, we have to begin from a low dose to gradually proceed towards an appropriate dose. So for now, 25 mcg is perfect. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and take medications with their consent. Repeat her thyroid function test after six weeks and then we will review again. Also, get her cholesterol checked as I suspect it to be high as well. I hope your mother is not having any other medical issues as well.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much.

She does not have any other ailments. She is having body aches and had a consultation. I was assured that her body pain would also go off. The doctor here in my place prescribed her with Thyronorm 50 mcg and review after one month. Your advise and comments are requested.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Considering her age, I had decided to begin with 25 mcg first and then gradually increase it later on. I would still go with my decision to take 25 mcg Thyronorm once daily. Repeat her thyroid function test after six weeks, and then we will review again.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
