Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is 1 month 3 days old. Now and then he is suffering from cold and sneezing. A whistling sound is also coming when he inhales. Kindly suggest few medicine and advice accordingly.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

1. Sneezing is normal in this age as long as they are not in distress or very frequent.

2. If he has nasal blockage or nasal secretions, then you can use or put normal saline drop in his nose and then suction the secretion with suction bulb.

3. You can also just leave two to three drops in his nose and let it run down. It neither obstruct the nose nor cause any harm.

4. Remember to do this before feeding and sleeping when the child remains calm and does have good feeding.

5. Check his breathing rate. Make sure it is more than 60 per minute and there are no retraction of sub-costal or retrosternal or suprasternal (below neck) region. If there are retractions then see your local pediatrician.

6. Is the whistling sound (wheezing) coming from nose or chest? If the sound is heard from nose, then saline drops should be enough. If from chest, then it needs evaluation.

7. If there is any fever, diarrhea, decreased activity or rash present, then consult your local pediatrician for physical evaluation.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
