What do the white matter foci on the frontal lobe of a patient's brain indicate in the MRI report?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan last week. The doctor told me today that I needed to be referred to a neurologist. My reports stated I had four white matter foci on my frontal lobes. I want a better understanding of my problem. I have attached my MRI report.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Can I know for what symptoms you underwent an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I had a traumatic brain injury, memory problems, headaches, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Answered by Dr. Hitesh Kumar

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can see four right frontal lobe non-specific white matter foci from the attached reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The radiologist has reported them non-specific because they are not pointing toward any specific disease. Such white matter foci can be found in the brain of a normal individual and are more commonly seen in old age, hypertension, and diabetes.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I have had several MRIs done, and this is the first time it has shown. Are the other findings on my MRI reports suggestive of traumatic brain injury (TBI)?

Answered by Dr. Hitesh Kumar

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Even if they are seen for the first time, they do not point toward any specific disease. You do not have to take any medicines for the same. I suggest you get your routine investigations like sugar and lipid profile done. Please maintain your blood pressure (BP) in the normal range.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Do I have an infarction due to a traumatic brain injury? I work out regularly and eat a balanced diet.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I cannot comment on the etiology of the non-specific white matter lesions.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
