How long does it take for the gum infection to subside after taking an antibiotic course?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently got an infection in the gum near my lower wisdom tooth and went to see a dentist who prescribed me a course of antibiotics to clear up the bacterial infection. I have now finished the course. While most of the pain and swelling has gone around my face there is still some minimal pain and swelling on the gum surrounding the wisdom tooth.

Is this normal?

If it is normal then how long will it last and should I get it checked if it continues?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern.

Yes, the condition will remain for a week or around. You need to take medication at least for five days, if you have done so and there is swelling you may continue for two more days. In case the swelling starts increasing further then you can visit again to the dentist otherwise there is no such need. But the cause needed to be addressed, if it was pericoronitis you need to get the tissue flap removed or extracted that wisdom tooth. If it was because of a cavity get a root canal treatment otherwise it may get infected again.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
