Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a problem with the bottom left wisdom tooth for some time. It would flare up and settle down again. I had an infection last six months before and took antibiotics for it. It has flared up again (though not as bad as the last time). The dentist gave me an antibiotic. However, I am reluctant to take antibiotics unless necessary. Is it possible to heal this with home remedies or over-the-counter medication?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is better to either complete the course of antibiotics to remove the infection or avoid antibiotics as much as possible. You can prevent medicines by brushing twice or three times a day after food. Use warm salt water gargle twice a day for a week or two. Use a chewing gum on that side to allow the tooth to get uncovered fully through its constant use causing the gums on top of the wisdom tooth to recede backward. If you have got the pain at least three or four times, then better to get the top gums surgically removed or the tooth itself.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

So judging by the attached image, do you think it can be healed without antibiotic use, or does it look like infection is already present?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I saw the image (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). At your age, it is possible to avoid the usage of antibiotics. The tooth has space to grow out. Keep brushing hard on the tooth, and squeeze on the gums. Try to remove any food debris below it. If pain starts, use warm salt water and gargle twice daily for a week or two. Still, if there is unbearable pain, then at least get the top gums removed.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
